A Beginning

To me, the outdoor spaces feel more welcoming beneath a warmer twilight, cooler temperature and the beginning of the waning of things. Autumn is my favourite season in Brisbane, as it’s much more comfortable generally, particularly if you like walking and the outdoors. I also love how parts of the ground are hidden beneath rust-coloured leaves and the ocean currents are warm, holding on to memories of summer as they linger behind the cycle of the land.

It’s also a good time for walking around with your headphones while dreaming (even in the autumn rain) and for reflection.

What is AJ Tope? I’ve never taken on that name before, so it’s a bit of a novelty at this stage. The idea is to start writing that book I’ve always wanted to, to document the process (just occasionally) and to write about things that make me happy. This is my own little quiet corner of the world without search engines, intense social media and competition. Fark yeah!

I’m hoping this space will grow organically. I’m not promoting it to friends or family yet, I’m just happy for it to be my creative space. I’m still not quite sure what I’ll write about, but I suspect, apart from mentioning my novel, I’ll write about Brisbane life – observations, reflections, life updates and anything that interests AJ Tope. If I do manage to get down to my favourite place in Australia, Tasmania, I’ll certainly write about that too.

I’m currently enjoying a quiet public holiday, courtesy of those who fell in the great wars and any attempts at ‘peacekeeping operations’. A thought goes out to them and how easy my life is today – at least for now. I’m starting a new job as a content developer on Monday and I’m nearing the end of my month of sobriety. Yes, April has been a dry month for me and I’m feeling a little better for it (not all that much, I have to say). Looking forward to maybe a sneaky scotch at the end of next week, or perhaps – as my increasingly sober sensible head is telling me – after my first paycheck.

If the words on this site manage to reach people and spark a thought or a response, great, and if they don’t and you’ve somehow found your way to my little patch of cyberspace – hello and welcome to AJ Tope, it’s dope. Haha, okay, maybe not.

Salud.
